I am no stranger to circuits and always enjoy a
walk which takes me around a route without retracing my steps. It all started
on the Farm of course, where I knew the fields and lie of the land so well that
I could walk several different paths to find my way back home.
When we were first married we had a marvellous
little book called ‘Walks for Motorists’ – 30 circular walks in Dorset, and
during that summer back in 1984 we explored and covered most of them – often in
the evenings and ending up in a Pub. Oh dear, that was the time when a drink or
two was permissable and pleasurable… Looking through the book I wrote dates to
remember our walks – the Golden Cap was a favourite, then the full 8 miles of
Ringstead Bay and Durdle Door, and 3 times to Stonebarrow Hill! In the book ‘My
Cup of Tea’, I describe these walks: “taking us along some wonderful routes –
from glorious coastal paths to woods and meadows, through delightful little
villages and even farm-yards, and past historical sites and monuments”. It was
an excellent way to get to know our local surroundings and also, more
importantly, to get to know each other…..
In France we didn’t need a car to set us off on a
circuit – living in the lovely countryside north of Mayenne, there were
beautiful scenic walks on our doorstep and plenty of ‘circular’ bike rides too.
(I will say more about living and writing in France another time).
Here in Lincolnshire there are a few circuits to
‘do’ around our house and even ‘tho very different to the previous 6 or 7
years, and the roads and even narrow lanes are so much busier, I find enjoyment
in just walking around. There is always something to see – the changing seasons
in the hedgerows, fields and gardens, listening to the birdsong and keeping still
and quiet to glimpse any wild life does tune up the finer senses!
I’m attaching photos of rabbits in a field, ducks on the verge of a lane, and especially for the Jubilee – a beautiful little pony with platinum mane!
