BEARS ON A CHAIR

One of my favourite little memories to store away from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was the short skit of HRH in the company of another British celebrity – Paddington Bear. In just a couple of minutes it seemed to encapsulate sentiments special to Britain – the ability to act naturally and still be true to oneself, a friendly and sociable disposition at any level and above all, a good sense of humour.
It prompted me to gather together my ever growing teddy bear family and try to fit them onto a chair – a large one of course! My oldest bear acquired in 1956 or so at the Farm, deserves an introductory quote from ‘Thank You for my Dinner’:-
…”a lovely surprise on Christmas Day when I awoke to see a large teddy bear sitting at the end of my bed. I still have the teddy, now a father and grandfather to all my other bears.”
Since then I have been on the lookout for companions for Edward – who, naturally still remains my favourite and very old friend even ‘tho his size seems to have diminished over the years! The antique shops in Horncastle (Lincolnshire) were very handy for ‘bear spotting’ and my very largest – and most expensive bear – came from one of those. When we moved to France in 2014, there was no room left for ‘big bear’ so he sat on my lap in the front seat of our very tightly packed and compact C3 – much to the amusement of children in passing cars and on the car deck of the ferry when I alighted! No seat belt for him either….
Some bears have been gifts from my 3 daughters who quickly leapt at the idea for Christmas and birthday presents, and one came courtesy of Kemble Pianos as a token of appreciation for a photo we sent in praise of their pianos!
So here we are in a mixed ensemble – 3 photos, one of my original Edward wearing a scarf and waistcoat I knitted in the mid 1950’s, one taking in the whole collection and one whilst attending a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Brittany!
I’m sure my 2 little granddaughters will be particularly interested in this Blog from Gran – and then of course, there’s our old favourite tune…
