Our house is full of various collections – sets of
books of course, along with C.D’s and records, but also pictures and paintings,
glasses, china, teddy bears and shells, and even until just before our move
back from France, a tray of assorted pine cones – all labled to remind me of
where I had picked each one up.
Attached is a photo of one of my book collections, and a couple showing my
favourite sets of china – a row of Mason’s jugs and my teapot display. I’ve
always warmed towards teapots and in fact my first literary writings of any
length (unpublished as yet), were called ‘My Cup of Tea’. I wrote this little
book in 2008, complete with photos and references. The foreword went as
follows:
“A loose collection of teatime memories, thoughts and observations through 50
years of journeying”.
My very first venture into the kitchen was to make ‘Afternoon Tea Scones’,
which became a bit of a ‘party piece’ for 2 or 3 decades. I’ll include a little
quote from my early book:-
“Over the years, although the scone remained the nucleus for ‘tea’ – and could
always be called upon at the last minute, my palette for 4pm or thereabouts
became more colourful and adventurous”.
Tea and teatime have played a big part in my life – reaching ‘high tea’ status
with birthdays and celebrations. To finish, I’ll add an excerpt from ‘A Family
Afloat’ (the 3rd section in my published book), where a double birthday tea was
certainly raised to new heights!
“I have a vivid picture in my mind of Isobel and me each carrying a birthday
cake, candles alight, up the companionway steps to the ‘tea party’ in the deck
saloon, singing of course”.
