Yes, it’s that time of year – actually I am a bit late with my Simnel
cake as it is should really appear around Mothering Sunday and in Lent…… But
this year I have made it for Easter and it has doubled up as a birthday cake
too! It’s been a particularly busy week for the Paris family – an outdoor
picnic braving the weather at Chatsworth with daughter no. 2, husband and
grandchildren, a get-together with daughter no. 3, and a visit from daughter
no.1. I’m attaching photos of the dual purpose cake, complete with a marzipan
layer through the centre and on top, with a circle of mini coloured chocolate
eggs around the base…plus a special surprise for my husband Graham! Sadly it
will remain just a model… but back in the 1960’s this was a very popular film
and we viewed it again recently on DVD and it hasn’t lost any of it’s magic.
Possibly a little risque at the time…. what a super band of actors it
involved….definitely a piece of history and therefore just right to be featured
on Graham’s cake! By the way, there may be a clue as to his age if you look
carefully!
Whilst in the kitchen I was reminded of a poem that I wrote a few years ago
which enumerated all the utensils and equipment from the last century and
before, that I still possess and use! Look out for it in a future blog. In the
meantime here is my 2022 Simnel cake.
