With my numbers of followers on ‘Instagram’
(pariscelia_author) steadily increasing and some nice responses to Posts – plus
the arrival of warm weather and school holidays, my mind turns to timing – in
particular the Great British summertime!
My husband has just embarked on a new hobby –
perhaps not the best of times as we are starting to pack ready for an imminent
house move. But gazing at the watch faces and miniscule parts awaiting his
expertise in mending and re-assembling, has made me look afresh at the clocks
and watches around us here – both in our house and in the immediate area.
I was given a Rone watch many years ago as a 21st
birthday gift from my parents and it finally gave up ticking 3 or 4 years ago
having kept good, accurate time for nearly half a century…as long as I
remembered to wind it up of course!
We have several rather picturesque clocks dotted
around our home – and soon to find suitable ‘spots’ to sit or hang in the next
house. I’ll attach a photo combining 2 of the most elaborate and a curious
juxtaposition! There is a rather splendid French style clock – not quite Louis
V (!), pretty to look at with lots of flowery decorations and swirls, but not a
reliable time keeper. Placed next to it – a very solid ‘Art Deco’ clock
complete with buttresses to make it even more substantial and impressive – the
little ‘trays’ on top of each are handy for storing winding keys.
The second photo is of our church clock, really at
the centre and hub of the village – and always useful to glance at when I’m on
my way to an appointment, hurrying to catch the Post, or if I’m late for a
Service!
And something I’ve just learnt is why, on some
clock faces, the Roman numeral IIII is used fo 20 past the hour – apparently,
it’s all a question of balance between numbers 12, 20 and 40 – so my husband’s
watch collection certainly deserves the final photo!
