‘A story is a bridge to a moment in time’ is a
quote I believe from ‘The Girl on the Train’.
A good story teller should be able to span the
distance and take you on a journey to a place, event or time without you hardly
noticing it. They wrap you up in their narrative and thinking, and before you
know it you are whisked away to some exotic land or find yourself in the midst
of intrigue and suspense. Of course, it doesn’t need to be so dramatic to
engage your thoughts, just a strand or link to form a strong connection.
When we lived in France, a new bridge was built
across our particularly lovely local river, a passerelle in fact as it was a
footbridge only. This was rather special in strength and design and actually
completed a circular walk or circuit as they are known. For me, this showed
such a vivid link with the past and with the people who walk that route today,
and also rejoined two rival areas of land which had been divided for some
years. A connecting bridge can be a meeting place whether literally or
figuratively, and holds such power within it’s span. Many battles and wars have
involved bridges in one way or another and naturally bridges are a favourite
venue for lovers’ trysts!
I’m attaching a page from a journal I kept in France
which illustrates the new passerelle crossing the Colmont river, and a couple
of photos taken close to our present home in Lincolnshire…. both showing
bridges crossing the same small stream or ‘drain’ – the first of a rather basic
wooden footbridge; the second of a narrow road bridge dating from 1882.
Incidentally, Gran would have been just one year old at the time the latter was
built!
Lastly, I have to amend another sort of bridge and
a misunderstanding from my previous News – I now realize that the idea of
travelling across London from West to East in one smooth journey is not quite
as easy as it looks on the map, and still involves a change and walk across
Paddington Station – but I did hold onto the happy dream and ease of a
no-change Tube for a couple of weeks!
